  • Graduate student Carina Fish is a 2018 Dr. Nancy Foster Scholar. The Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarship Program provides support for independent graduate-level studies in oceanography, marine biology, or maritime archaeology, particularly to women and minorities. This program is administered through the NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries as mandated by the National Marine Sanctuaries Act.

  • Graduate student Carina Fish has been awarded a 2018 Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship. Administered by the Fellowships Office of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, the Ford Foundation Fellowship Programs seek to increase the diversity of the nation’s college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, to maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and to increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students.

  • Ken Verosub's article "First-order reversal curve diagrams: A new tool for characterizing the magnetic properties of natural samples" has reached 500 citations.

  • Jessica Mizzi, a Microbiology Graduate Group student working with Dawn Sumner, has been honored with a NSF Graduate Research Fellowship. Jessica is working on understanding how light and hydrogen sulfide affect the distribution of oxygenic versus anoxygenic photosynthesis in natural environments to understand the effects of O2 production on Archean microbial communities.

  • "Michael Poland: Life at the Living Edge" - Mike Poland (B.S. '97, Geology) fell in love with volcanoes as a child, but it was dinosaurs - and UC Davis – that steered him toward a career in geology.

  • "How the Moon Formed Inside a Vaporized Earth Synestia" - Sarah Stewart, Simon Lock, Harvard graduate student and visiting UC Davis student, and their colleagues propose a new model for the moon's origin. Journal of Geophysical Research - Planets.

  • The Earth and Planetary Sciences Department helped found the new World Water Initiative - bringing California's water solutions to the world. The World Water Initiative is one of UC Davis' Big Ideas. Big Ideas are forward-thinking, interdisciplinary programs and projects that build upon the strengths of UC Davis to positively impact the world for generations to come.

  • Professors Kari Cooper, John Rundle and Bill Casey have been elected as Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Fellows are chosen in recognition of their contributions to science and technology, scientific leadership and extraordinary achievements across disciplines.   • Recent Ph.D. student Alisha Clark's research at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) was chosen as a research highlight in APS Science, the laboratory's annual report. "Enhancing Our Understanding of Mantle Melt Fraction" (page 172).

  • Rob Zierenberg has received the AIPG Section Leadership Award. "Dr. Robert Zierenberg understands the value that AIPG provides geology students in career development, ethics and technical professionalism. He is a true mentor for his students and an example of leadership that models AIPG’s ethical conduct, professional responsibility and competence. "

  • Geerat Vermeij has been awarded the 2017 Fellows Medal by the Science Council of the California Academy of Sciences. This medal is the Academy's highest honor and is awarded to "especially prominent scientists who have been recognized for their outstanding contributions to their specific field(s) of science."

  • Magali Billen has received the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation of Berlin. This award is given to internationally renowned scientists who completed their doctorates within the last 18 years.

  • Isabel Montañez is the 2017 recipient of the Laurence L. Sloss Award. The award is given annually by the Geological Society of America in recognition of outstanding career contributions to the interdisciplinary field of sedimentary geology. This award is the Sedimentary Geology Division's highest honor; it is given in recognition of Professor Montañez's sustained level of scientific contributions to sedimentary geology, service to the society, and inspiration to many young women geoscientists.
