Dr. Palmer is an oceans and climate scientist focused on understanding climate change in the past and present and connecting science to policy. Dr. Palmer earned a PhD in Earth and Planetary Science from the University of California, Davis and was a University of California, Chancellor's Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California Merced. Her research investigates biogeochemistry of a changing world, impacts of environmental change on ecosystems, and human dimensions of global change. Past research focused on investigating marine sediment records to understand ecosystem responses to climate change in the Holocene and assessment of wildfire impact on the biogeochemistry of burned landscapes.

She is experienced in connecting science to policy, she previously served as an AAAS/GSA-USGS Congressional Science Fellow in the US Senate, as a Presidential GOLD Fellow at the California Council on Science and Technology and UC Center of Sacramento, and as an AGU Thriving Earth Exchange Community Science Fellow.
