Bio

Dr. Amanda Thomas is a geophysicist specializing in observational seismology. She earned a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. in Geophysics from the University of California, Berkeley. She then completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University before joining the faculty at the University of Oregon. In 2025, she moved to UC Davis.

Her research leverages subtle (and not-so-subtle) vibrations of the Earth's surface to study tectonic, volcanic, and surface processes. She integrates data collection, analysis, interpretation, and simplified numerical modeling to better understand Earth's complex physical systems. While her primary focus is advancing fundamental geophysical knowledge, her work also enhances our ability to predict, prepare for, and respond to geohazards.

Beyond research, she is deeply committed to mentorship, pedagogy, and open-source software, aiming to foster accessibility and collaboration in the geosciences.
