From Yarn to Oceans: Susann Pinter’s “Project Ecosystem” Lands a Spot at GSA Connects
When Susann Pinter’s crochet exhibit “Project Ecosystem” debuted on Picnic Day at UC Davis earlier this year, it mesmerized thousands with its intricate and unique depiction of marine life and ecosystems. This week, Ms. Pinter, Academic Coordinator for CalTeach Mathematics and Science Teaching, was excited to announce that the project was accepted for presentation at the Geological Society of America (GSA) Connects meeting this September.
Utilizing reclaimed materials such as Styrofoam, fishing line, chicken wire, foam cones, burlap sacks, and newspaper alongside yarn, Ms. Pinter led students, professors, and the broader Davis community in crafting a vivid tableau of marine ecosystems. Their work not only illustrated the beauty of these environments but also highlighted the urgent effects of climate change on them.
Originally conceived in April 2023, “Project Ecosystem” aimed to spotlight the critical need for climate action through the lens of vanishing kelp forests in California’s oceans. By weaving together art and science, the exhibit fosters a deeper public understanding of environmental issues, emphasizing the necessity for a cleaner, more sustainable future.
Ms. Pinter hopes that by leveraging the intersection of creativity and scientific advocacy, the project paves the way for increased awareness and dialogue about climate change and ocean conservation. “Project Ecosystem” will be presented at the session titled "Putting the 'Art' in Earth: Exploring the Intersection between Geoscience and the Creative Arts" on September 24 at 8AM in room 209A of the Anaheim Convention Center.
